After a wonderful conversation on Instagram about unmedicated births at home and birthing centers, I decided to compile this list of resources for the woman interested in taking charge of her birth and staying informed. I have found that in America we have started to view (oftentimes unconsciously) birth as more of a medical procedure and something to fear. In reality it was created by God, and while yes painful, something truly beautiful and a gift from God.

When a woman is giving birth, she has sorrow because her hour has come, but when she has delivered the baby, she no longer remembers the anguish, for joy that a human being has been born into the world. John 16:21

How does one even begin to make the decision to birth unmedicated versus with an epidural? Pray and research. Ask God for wisdom on how to approach birth and be mindful of the options. That is why I have compiled a list here of accounts, books, podcasts and more to help you make an informed decision.

I will also add that I understand things go wrong during birth. A lot of these things can be avoided while some cannot be. I appreciate in one of the  documentaries I share below (that is extremely pro-midwifery care), a story where the midwife and mother realize a c-section is necessary. These things DO happen and I encourage moms and moms-to-be to be FLEXIBLE and KNOWLEDGEABLE. Don’t be coerced into these decisions but rather be part of choosing the best path for the entry of your baby into the world.

***Please note that I have not necessarily watched or read all of the below. I have tried my best to review and include ones that seem to be 1) the most helpful and 2) align with what I believe. With this being said I don’t agree with everything on every page and encourage you to tread carefully and ask God for wisdom as you begin your research journey. God is the CREATOR OF LIFE and cares very much about your pregnancy, birth and baby.***

Positive Birth Stories

I also found searching “positive birth stories” online helped me mentally prepare for birth too. There are two on my page: Hadley’s Birth Story and Juniper’s Birth story. I hope this list helps and is a good springboard as you prepare for the birth of your little one! If you end up choosing a midwife center birth, be sure to check out His and Hers Birth Center Bag Checklist.

For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.
Psalm 139:13-14
