Hadley Rose: month five

(Okay, I am committed to these object numbers and had like 15 minutes to do this before Emmett woke up…So we are just calling this month a wrap and hoping that Christmas ornaments or pine cones or something work really well with a “6” next month! :-p)

IMG_2708.jpg

Hadley had a rocky fifth month, but I am pleased to say that at the end of it we are hitting a new groove. I mean, that is the story and life with a baby, right? Find one groove, then they change. Find the next groove and so on.

Either way, Jake and I smiled at each other tonight as we put both kids to bed around 7 and came downstairs to do our own thing and let the kiddos sleep.

IMG_2779

We had been rocking Hadley to sleep but it was becoming such an ordeal. Finally one afternoon at nap time I go so fed up with the bouncing, squatting, butt patting etc. (because she just would not fall asleep that day) that I just laid her down in her merlin sleep sack with a blanket over her head ( I watch her on the monitor…she is fine. I don’t need angry mom comments!) and left the room. And guess what? She fell asleep. Ever since then life has felt a lot more “freeing” shall we say.

This is not to say there haven’t been some tears and screams but overall it has been an excellent transition.

On another note, the puking has lessened exponentially as well!! I can’t tell you how happy I am to say that. We don’t go through five outfits a day anymore. Just three 😉

Hadley adores Emmett. If anyone can calm her down (other than the boob), it is Emmett. Her eyes are glued to him and she loves to watch him and any interaction he gives her.

What else to say? I feel like before I post these I think of tons of things and then can’t think of them! What do you want to know?

Some Hadley Stats

weight: 12 lbs 8 oz as of last month. I have not weighed her in 4 weeks though.

height: *to be added* I seriously don’t ever remember this!

diapers: size 2

clothing: She is in a mix of 0-3 and 3-6. This is still true….*sigh*

What Hadley is up to:

-starting to be able to sit. Like, she can’t really sit by herself but I can tell it is coming soon.

-shrieks. Is this a total girl thing that I missed out on for the last 2 years? Cuz I am actually OK without it….she is LOUD!

-rolled over. She can be found on her side often stuck halfway between roll though.

-smiling and laughing . Gosh, this girl loves laughing and smiling. She is ELF.

-self entertainer. This is not true ALL the time but some mornings I just set her under her gym and she just hangs out for a long time.

-We successfully unswaddled her. She sleeps in the merlin sleep sack now.

The D family |black ridge

I don’t know what’s better than having your lifelong friends visit you from New England for a couple days AND getting to take their family photos. Dan and Danielle are the reason my husband and I met. Danielle and I were best friends growing up as were Dan and Jake. They introduced us on a whirlwind road trip and the rest is history!

Our children now get to grow up together and it seriously could not be any sweeter to watch. Their daughter totally “cheesed” it up for the camera and I am lovin’ how these shots turned out!

Postpartum Hair Loss

Ok, I just need to be real with you all for a second.

I think my baby is the cutest thing since April the Giraffe had her baby. She (sometimes) smells like roses and sunshine and when she is sleeping it is the most peaceful thing ever. I love when my son holds her and looks at me with his humongous, all-cheeks, proud smile.

IMG_0397-2

What I don’t love are the things that happen to me postpartum. Everyone knows those first few weeks after having a baby include bleeding, ouchies, a stomach that no amount of pizza can fix and you may as well start dragging around a water fountain if you plan to nurse.

But when all of that is said and done and you think life is on the uphill…your hair starts falling out.

Say whaaat?!

Those prenatals that gave you those glorious locks just aren’t doing the tricks anymore. Instead your estrogen level drops taking a ton of hair along with it. When I had Emmett this happened and I took some biotin and eventually my hair was back to normal. This time though it feels like it is rougher. The amount of hair that I can lose is intense.

I became slightly desperate to help my hair and put to rest the balding spots (they were for real happening). I wanted to do this naturally for my hair and not harm it in any way. In my ‘quest for knowledge (and to defeat this dragon of a problem)’ I came across three resources that I wanted to share.

hair loss

1.Biotin. I mentioned earlier that I started taking this after giving birth to Emmett. I decided to do so again because I think it may have helped the hair loss stop a little sooner. If you decide to take Biotin, know that it is measured in micrograms. You can take a tablet anywhere from around 30 mcg to 10,000 (not sure if it goes higher). If you do a quick google search you will hear different arguments for how much should be taken while breastfeeding.

2. Collagen Peptides. If you follow me on instagram you may have seen my post earlier this week about Vital Proteins. Collagen is an extremely beneficial and natural protein. It helps strengthen hair, nails, bones and even helps your skin. You can read all the science and awesomeness of it here. As for me, I’ve been taking this in my smoothies and apple cider 1 or 2 times a day.

3. Essential Oil Spray. I wish I could give the person who came up with this credit, but I ran across it on instagram I think! Anyways, I took a tiny spray bottle, filled it with water and added 10 drops of the following: lavender, rosemary and cedarwood. I will say that some websites say don’t let lavender near your babies. I feel comfortable using this spray though because I literally spray maybe 3 squirts in the morning and at night directly to my scalp. It is do diluted that, for me personally, I am not concerned.

Ok, so you obviously want to know if this all worked, right? Well, it did. it did not all work immediately. It took a little bit of time. But in a couple of weeks my balding spots were already starting to fill in and this week less hair was falling out of my head in the shower!

IMG_8368

Which of the 3 worked best? Well, I am not sure. I used all 3 simultaneously because I was a bit desperate.

Did enough time pass that your hair just stopped falling out on its own? Possibly. But I know I had nothing to lose taking these three things. If anything, the collagen and biotin are making my nails strong and my skin smoother (less breakouts, people!!!). And the essential oil spray is making my hair smell lovely.

An essay at Mother.ly

Before Hadley was born I wrote an essay about the end of pregnancy. I submitted it online and then kind of forgot about it to be honest. Well a couple weeks ago I got a message that  Mother.ly had accepted it and decided to publish it. I was so excited!!!

Then this week I got notice that it had officially gone live on their site. I wanted to share it with y’all. Thank you for reading here and I hope you enjoy it there.

“It will only be so much longer that my son runs over to me to kiss and hug my belly, unknowingly kissing and hugging his little sibling from the outside world….People will stop genuinely asking how I am feeling….Seats will not be miraculously opened anymore for the woman with a huge belly…It will not be forever that my husband whispers his love to an unseen child, telling them about the world they will soon enter.”

Read the full essay here, “There’s no way to speed up this pregnancy, so perhaps I should slow down.

Apple Picking 2017

~All PinkBlush product was given in exchange for my honest review.~

I don’t know what better way to bring in October than with apple picking! Our friends came into town this weekend and we headed out to get our daily fall dose of apples and pictures.

IMG_7369.JPG

We did this last year with the same friends and I love the idea of starting traditions with friends. Our kids all had so much fun together. It was even more fun this year with Emmett because he could walk and even “kind of” climb the ladder. If you remember, last fall he was still working through physical therapy and had only been walking for about a month before we went.

IMG_7285.jpg

We go to the same orchard every year and have been since we moved here. They spray their apples with organic pesticides and I am pretty sure the owners are Christian. It is actually in his backyard which is pretty cool! I think the place is growing in popularity though which makes me happy for the owners but a little sad for us.

IMG_7055

So what does one wear to the apple orchard? Well I know the plaid and the puffy vests are totally in and I love that look, but I opted for cozy and chill instead. I am pretty sure that’s where I stand with most clothes though >.< I love my new shirt from PinkBlush and picked it out specifically for this fall. It’s extremely comfortable and is a great shirt for hanging out around the house or doing fun day trips with my family!

Hadley Rose: month three

Second children definitely get the short end of the social media platform at times! Hadley turned 3 months on the 16th…10 days ago!

IMG_6672 (2)

I’ve decided she is an easy baby if you know her. If you don’t, she can be challenging. She has certain things she “needs” to sleep and if she is tired and can’t fall asleep, you have one unhappy + mad baby sometimes! Other times she falls asleep right away…you just never know what it’ll be! I feel like I need to write a tiny book on “Knowing Hadley” for anyone who watches her.

IMG_6722 (2)

We are out of the “witching hour” *phew* and it has been easier to get her down at night. She is sleeping AMAZINGLY. Two nights ago she ate at 7, went to bed at 8, got the pacifier reinserted a couple times during the night, but did not eat again util 7 the following morning!!!  Last night she went down around 7:30 and woke at 5 to eat. I can’t remember if  I had to wake up to give her the pacifier before that. We have continued an “eat, wake, sleep” routine. We did this with Emmett too and it has helped tremendously with sleep!!!

IMG_6720 (2)

Some Hadley Stats

weight: No clue.

-wants attention

-does not care who it holding her until it is time to sleep

P.S. Taking these photos is not always a walk in the park with Emmett around–haha– but there are some other fun shots then too and Jake always helps!

Fall or Summer? [Fashion Friday for the ‘normal’ family]

Hey Guys! OK, I am starting ANOTHER series, but this time on fashion. I know, since when did I get that interested in fashion? I don’t think it is that I am THAT into fashion, it is just I need to clothe my kids AND me AND make sure the husband doesn’t wear the same T-shirt three days in a row. So by default, I care a little bit about fashion. But this is FASHION for the AVERAGE/NORMAL/WE-DON’T-CARE-ABOUT-BRAND-NAMES family. I just shop at normal places. Old Navy. Target. Online stores. Thrift stores.

So this series is to keep you updated with sales, specific items you need in your wardrobe at easy to drive to (or click to) places, and how to make it through the year in some kind of style.

Today’s focus is….having a wardrobe for transitioning seasons!

Fashion Friday {For the normal family]-transitional pieces

Here in PA we are going from cool fall days to summer days still in between. In fact, yesterday I went to the largest consignment sale here (happens 2 times a year) and bought a bunch of wintery items for our kiddos. Uh, $2 plaid long sleeves? Yes, please! That’ll be my wannabe lumberjack son over there.

~  ~  ~

For my Mama Tribe:

I am loving this piece from Pink Blush. Its lightweight bamboo material makes it a great transition piece. I paired it with leggings and a scarf the other night and we went to the museum. It’s also the type of piece that I feel makes you look cute running around town but when you get home–it is so comfortable–it makes you just want to stay in it and snuggle up by the fireside. [shop my look here]

IMG_6201 (3)

For the Littles:

Emmett: One of our favorite pieces so far is a plaid hoodie (link is similar to his) from Carter’s. I find that Carter’s can have great essentials for kids, i.e. hoodies and pants. Emmett’s been rocking this hoodie and it’s great because he can wear it as a light jacket or as his actual shirt right now. It has some great fall colors in it too 🙂

Hadley: She is still fitting into 0-3 which means we have mainly summer clothes for her. I’ve been pairing onesies though with lighter stretchy pants. They’re not too hot and can be paired with any kind of top or dress which I love. (Her romper is from Old Navy but I don’t think it is sold anymore. Similar ones can be found here or here.) Also, drool is totally in style.

For the Husband Squad:

My husband wore a long sleeve shirt the other week because the temperature dropped so much! If you know him, this is a big deal as he lives in T-shirts. Old Navy thermals are great and that’s one of my husband’s ‘go-to’ shirts when cooler temps hit.

old navy thermal

So there you have it! Style for the NORMAL family.

What’s in your wardrobe this September?
