My husband and I both grew up homeschooled.  When it came time to decide what we wanted to do for our kids, we decided to take it one child at a time. So last fall (2019) we enrolled Emmett at a Montessori preschool for 3 half days a week. It is perfect for him and his social personality.  But it lacked one thing which we knew going in: no Bible education. At our home we have carved out specific devotional time every day, make a point of playing kids praise songs and take our kids to Bible studies and church throughout the week. But I wanted more. Why? I want our family to be a Deuteronomy 6:7 family.

These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts.  Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.

It took me time to decide what I wanted to do (having a third baby at the same time will do that to you). But when it finally came down to it, I realized I couldn’t find what I was looking for. I was not looking for a detailed lesson plan, I wasn’t trying to include math and science lessons inside of it, and I didn’t want to spend much money. So through Google and Pinterest searches I came up with what is below. I’m just a mom trying to teach real Gospel truths to two little kids who really like to interrupt me when I teach.

What I will say now is that my kids beg me almost everyday to do Bible school. It became regular and routine immediately.

Some things to note: About our Family

• My kids are (Hadley) 2.5 and (Emmett) almost 5 as we start this. Some of the activities are very easy for Emmett and some more challenging for Hadley. Some are just right for both of them or can be adjusted. I find if it challenges Hadley, I am here to help her and if it is too easy for Emmett he is still just enjoying the time together. Don’t fret over this aspect. Time spent learning the Bible is never wasted time.
• A couple years ago Jake and I were both trained in M28 or Discovery Bible studies. These studies are for people interested in the Bible and wanting to learn more about Jesus. The premise of these studies is reading through stories in the Bible and asking a set of questions. I have incorporated 2 of these main questions into the weekly lessons. “What does this story tell us about God?” What does this story tell us about man?” These are not necessarily easy questions for little kids but with the parent’s guidance can get to the heart of the answer.  For days where this is the only question, to get to this answer it will take several other guiding questions.

Some things to note: About the Preschool Bible Curriculum

• This is set up to do 3x a week. We do it every other day.
• I gleaned from various online resources as well as made up some weeks on my own. One of the biggest resources I used initially was Hubbard’s Cupboard. Some questions are from Kids Sunday School Place  and craft ideas are primarily off Pinterest. 
• Every song has hand motions. Some are motions I remembered from my childhood and others were made up. Just have fun with it and do what comes to mind!
• All the songs I use can be found on Spotify or Amazon Music. Two of our favorite resources for music are: Cedarpoint Kids and Veggie Tale Tunes
• Every Bible verse has hand motions. Again I just made them up as we went along.

Bibles we Use

• • The Beginner’s Bible, (This is my favorite one. I read it as a child and I think it’s a great introductory Bible for kids. Hadley is OBSESSED with it and carries it around the house with her.)
  • The Jesus StoryBook Bible (This Bible is the rage right now. Honestly though, it is not my favorite. I dislike the pictures and think it resembles the Message translation for kids. What I DO like about it is how it makes every story point to Jesus and teaches children how the Bible is ONE big story)
  • The Complete Illustrated Children’s Bible (This one is definitely geared for older kids [5-8]. We use it as our third option during the week and I sometimes change sentences up for the kids to understand better. I like the pictures in this book a lot and find it includes stories that other kids Bibles skip over sometimes).

Everyday Tasks for Preschool Bible

These aren’t mentioned below on each day but I thought it was worth noting that we do these 3 things also:

• Opening prayer
• Calendar time (the only thing that does not pertain to Bible school)
• recap (either of previous week or day)

 

Week 1: The Creation Story

Day 1:

• Read Bible story of “Creation” in kids Bible
• Questions about story:
  • Who created the world?
  • What did he make?
  • What does this story tell us about God?
• Songs
  • God made the _____ (sung to the tune of “The Farmer in the Dell”) Pick a different thing from each day (sun, animals, grass, rest)
    • i.e. God made the sun, God made the sun, God made the sun and it was very good.
  • This is the Day
• Bible memory verse: Gen 1:1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.
• Activity:  Day + Night: We cut out the pictures found in the link and glued all the day pictures onto one page and all the night pictures onto another page.

Day 2:

• • Read Bible story of Creation in another kids Bible.
  • Questions about story:
    • What did God make on day #__?
    • Was everything God made very good or very bad?
    • What does this tell us about man?
  • Songs (We keep the same two songs all week)
  • Practice Bible memory: Gen 1:1
  • Activity: Tracing and Writing Numbers (Emmett) and Name Tracing (Hadley) I thought this tied in with counting for the days and God making people.

Day 3

• Read Bible story of Creation in another kids Bible.
• Questions about story:
  • What did God do on the 7th day?
  • When do you rest?
  • How do you feel after you rest?
  • Is rest important?
• Songs
• Practice memory verse: Gen 1:1
• Activity: Creation Booklet

Week 2: Adam + Eve and The Fall

Day 1:

• Read Bible story of “The Fall” in kids Bible
• Questions about story:
  • What did the snake make Eve eat?
  • What does God do with Adam and Eve?
  • What does this story tell us about God?
• Songs
  • Standing in the Need of Prayer
  • Be Careful Little Eyes
• Bible memory verse: Psalm 119:11 I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.
• Activity:  Make the Tree of Knowledge. This was one we made up on our own. I drew the tree and the kids colored it and glued on green packing paper and cotton balls for the fruit

Day 2:

• Read Bible story of “The Fall” in kids Bible
• Questions about story:
  • Is the snake good or bad?
  • Who is the snake?
  • What does this story tell us about man?
• Songs (We keep the same two songs all week)
• Practice Bible memory verse: Ps. 119:11
• Activity: Paper Plate Snake: This is another activity that we just did on our own (see below). Emmett had done it at school prior to and we copied it. A quick Pinterest search will bring up different options with directions!

Day 3

• Read Bible story of  “The Fall” in another kids Bible
• Questions about story:
  • What happened to our world because of Adam and Eve’s choice?
  • How can we listen and obey God?
• Songs
• Practice Bible memory verse
• Activity:  Snack with apples and peanut butter (continuing talk about Eve eating the fruit)

Week 3: Noah’s Ark + The Flood

Day 1:

• Read Bible story of “Noah’s Ark” in kids Bible
• Questions about story:
  • Why did God save Noah?
  • What does this story tell us about man?
• Songs
  • Who Built the Ark?
  • Rise and Shine
• Bible memory verse: Gen 7:5 And Noah did all that the Lord commanded him. 
• Activity: Animal drawing activity: We did the Leopards + Zebras to help the kids work on finishing and adding to a picture.

Day 2:

• Read Bible story of “Noah’s Ark” in kids Bible
• Questions about story:
  • How many days did it rain?
  • What kinds of animals were on the ark?
  • What does this story tell us about God?
• Songs (We keep the same two songs all week)
• Practice Bible memory verse: Gen 7:5
• Activity: Popsicle Stick Ark

Day 3:

• • Read Bible story of “Noah’s Ark” in another version of kids Bible
  • Questions about story:
    • What was God’s promise in the sky?
    • How does this story affect our lives?
  • Songs
  • Practice Bible memory verse: Gen 7:5
  • Activity: God is faithful craft (as pictured below) inspired by this page. 

Week 4: Abraham

Day 1:

• Read Bible story of “Abraham”* in kids Bible (Depending on which Bible you are reading, the story of Abraham is broken up. We focused on the 3 visitors telling Sarah she would have a baby, God telling Abraham his descendants would outnumber the stars in the sky and also did Isaac as a sacrifice. The last story can be extremely hard to explain depending on the age of your children. We decided to tackle it, but this is written in such a way that you don’t have to add it.)
• Questions about story:
  • Character identification. Who are some of the people in this story?
  • How many visitors came?
  • What does this story tell us about God?
• Songs
  • Father Abraham
  • Trust and Obey
• Bible memory verse: Psalm 28:7 “The LORD is my strength and my shield; in him my heart trusts, and I am helped;”
• Activity:  Counting Stars project. We cut up “stars” (stickers would be way easier!!!) and numbered papers 1-5 and 1-10. The kids then had to place as many stars next to the number written.

Day 2:

• Read Bible story of “Abraham” in another version of kids Bible
• Questions about story:
  • What does this story tell us about man?
• Songs (We keep the same two songs all week)
• Practice Bible memory verse: Ps. 28:7
• Activity: God’s Promises Star Activity (This is one we came up with on our own)
  • We used this salt dough recipe , had the kids paint them and then we named several of God’s promises for us. You can create a banner with them, hang them from a ceiling, make a mobile, etc.
  • This is time consuming and could be used for 2 days or as an extra activity at another point in time!

Day 3:

• Read Bible story of “Abraham” in another version of kids Bible
• Questions about story:
  • What does this story teach us to do?
• Practice Bible memory verse: Ps. 28:7
• Popsicle Stick Star We did a variation of this craft. We painted our sticks and used the verse Gen 26:4.
