Do you know what day is the 143rd day of the year? It’s today! May 22, 143 days from January 1. 143 is affectionately known as the number of love “1” (I) “4” (love) “3” (you) and 143 day is national day of kindness in honor of Fred Rogers. I grew up watching Mister Rogers and recently saw the latest film following part of his life. He was the definition of kindness and this sounds like the perfect day for him.
I am excited to be helping celebrate the launch of the new Tomorrow campaign powered by Remake Learning. Tomorrow is inspired in many ways by Fred Rogers and his empathetic, child-centered, wholly unique approach to learning. A wonderful quote by Fred Rogers says, “Often, when you think you’re at the end of something, you’re at the beginning of something else.” We all might resonate a little with that currently and what that “something else” will look like is really up to us.
What is the Tomorrow Campaign?
The Tomorrow campaign is focused on asking what we can do today to make tomorrow a more promising place for every learner (which involves OUR children!). We want to hear everyone’s ideas, questions and see what we can come up with together!
From May-October of 2020, Tomorrow by Remake Learning is going to host a series of virtual meet-ups such as: workshops, youth documentaries and podcasts, and social media chats. Grants will help equip educators to forge the future of learning. (For virtual event schedules and more information, click here.)
The Tomorrow campaign recognizes that what sustains us through exceptional times like these are the essential qualities that make us human—our capacity for love, the power of our relationships, and the strength we get from belonging to a society that is capable of working together to do so
much more than any one of us can do on our own.
My “Something Else”
What can we do today to make tomorrow a more promising place for all learners? Over the last several weeks I’ve realized just how much learning can happen at home. I have realized opportunities I have missed over the years but began to take advantage of while home these past months. Simple things like learning numbers on the microwave, finding letters on signs, taking time to explain things that I think might be over my kids heads but in time they will begin to learn.
I’ve seen my husband come into his teaching role more, one that he reserves more for youth group and teaching snowboarding. Instead I saw him get down on the floor with our oldest son and draw organs and ladybugs for him to learn about. I think there is so much positive at home that sometimes we overlook. I intend to step into a new season of everyday learning in our home for all three of our children.
